EC-US Task Force on Biotechnology Research

Since 1990, the EC-US Task Force on Biotechnology Research has been coordinating transatlantic efforts to promote research on biotechnology and its applications for the benefit of society. The Task Force was established in June 1990 by the European Commission and the White House Office of Science and Technology. The Task Force has acted as an effective forum for discussion, for coordination and for developing new ideas, and it serves as an important think-tank. It focuses on the future of biotechnology and challenges the scientific communities on both sides of the Atlantic to expand their thinking beyond specific scientific disciplines. The dialogue has been further broadened by including social scientists in all activities.

The Task Force hosts annual meetings and focussed workshops at which these experts work together to exploit European and US potential in this important field. This year, the Task Force celebrates its twenty anniversary and their annual meeting will be held at the UPF Rectorate meeting room (Mercè building), the 3rd and 4th June 2010. During the meetings, the Task Force Group will analyze the evolution and impact of the Biotehcnology from the creation of this group. It will serve also to define the challenges, the new research lines and priorities in the United States of America and Europe.
